Grayden Laing
My work explores the tension between control and chance, structure and intuition. I am drawn to the subtle emotional impression of everyday experiences—the overlooked moments, textures, and fragments that shape how we understand ourselves and the world around us. Through my practice, I aim to translate these fleeting impressions into visual language that feels both personal and universally resonant. I approach making as a process of discovery rather than execution. Materials and forms evolve through layering, revision, and response, allowing each piece to carry a sense of time and movement within it. I am interested in how meaning shifts through repetition, distortion, and recontextualization, and how a viewer’s perception can complete the work in ways I cannot predict. Themes of memory, identity, and impermanence run throughout my work. I am especially interested in the way memory distorts—how it softens edges, heightens certain details, and erases others. By embracing ambiguity and openness, I invite viewers to bring their own experiences into the work, forming connections that are intimate and unique. Ultimately, my goal is not to provide answers but to create spaces for reflection—moments where curiosity, emotion, and revelations can thrive.
