Martha Laing

Martha Laing

Martha Laing’s eco printing practice is rooted in observation, experimentation, and a close relationship with the natural world. Working with natural dyes and mordants on paper, silk, and cotton, she creates one of a kind prints using leaves and flowers. Each piece is shaped by the unique chemical reactions of plant tannins and the discharge effects of oxalic acid, resulting in impressions that cannot be exactly repeated. Natural dyes are also used to build colour around the prints, many of them grown in the dye garden at the farm.

What draws Martha Laing most deeply to eco printing is the way it transforms how she sees her surroundings. Plants, leaves, and flowers become more than part of the landscape. They become sources of possibility, inviting curiosity, attention, and discovery. Through this process, she looks at the natural world with fresh eyes, continually exploring what each plant might reveal through print.
