Emmi Coburn

Emmi Coburn

Emmi Coburn is an oil painter drawn to the quiet poetry of everyday life. Growing up in St. Thomas, Ontario, she learned early to notice light shifting across a wall, the personality of an animal, and the extraordinary feeling held within ordinary moments. Her work is rooted in observation, but guided by emotion.

Working primarily in oil, Coburn is captivated by the medium’s richness and patience. Oil paint invites her to slow down and demands intention, layering, and trust in the process. She is interested in the tension between realism and tenderness, creating paintings that feel familiar yet slightly heightened, as though memory itself has softened their edges.

Animals appear frequently in her work, including cats, dogs, and farm animals, each rendered with presence and personality. She is fascinated by the way people project themselves onto animals, and by how they can mirror vulnerability, humour, and longing. Through these subjects, she explores themes of connection, comfort, and the subtle absurdity of being human.

At its core, Coburn’s practice is about finding beauty in the mundane and making space for play. While she approaches painting with seriousness and care, she also embraces texture, expressive brushwork, and moments of spontaneity. For her, painting is both devotion and joy. Her hope is that her work invites viewers to pause, to feel seen, to smile, and to reconnect with the softness within themselves.
